July is Disability Pride Month! Disability Pride Month is celebrating its 32nd anniversary in the United States. Every year commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was passed on July 26, 1990, to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities.
In addition to commemorating the signing of the ADA, Disability Pride Month celebrates disabled persons embracing their disabilities as integral parts of who they are, reclaiming visibility in public and rejecting shame and ableism (American Bar Association). Cities across the country will often celebrate Disability Pride Month with parades and other festivities that help end the negative stigma attached to those with disabilities, as well as celebrate the lives lost fighting for disabled rights.
